All About Shelf School

Shelf School is a happy and thriving village school. Over the last few years we have seen our school roll rise from around 150 in five classes to 300 in ten classes by. As our school continues to grow we are adding more and more teaching areas. We are rightly very proud of the new computer suite, which was refurbished last year and reception classroom built in 2000/2001. Over the academic year 2001/2002 we built another classroom.

Our teaching staff team number 14 and we have an excellent team of support staff numbering 33. Each year we now accept 45 children into our reception classes housed in the new foundation unit as from September 2002. Classes for the rest of the children's time with us are then organised on an age basis. Some children are educated in single age classes, others in split-age classes. This situation, although not ideal, is managed in a very thorough manner and all children in any one age group all study exactly the same work in the core subjects of Maths, English and Science. Topic Work and foundation subject work is completed at an age specific level but the teachers have a greater flexibility as to the areas of the syllabus covered.

We offer a wide and varied selection of out of hours activities including Gymnastics, Football, Netball, Gardening, Orchestra, Recorders and ICT. We obtained the Basic Skills Agency quality mark in 2005. Parental involvement in school is strong with many parents, grandparents and friends offering their services in school on an individual basis. Help is always welcome whether it be help with readers; assistance on the computers; help digging over our vegetable patch; or whatever. We also have a thriving PTFA that raise enormous amounts of money for the benefit of all the children in school.
